Celebrity Hunting at #TIFF2012

I always say year after year that I am going to go to Toronto and find celebrities during the internationally known Toronto International Film Festival (aka TIFF), but somehow I always find some excuse not to go (and always end up totally regretting it later). This year (while I did make a few major mistakes in the short-timed planning process) I decided that it was a must, and I just had to make it happen!

Friday a friend and I decided to stake out in the general areas of Wellington and John Streets and King and John Streets to see who we could see. This festival is known for reeling in the big wigs of the Entertainment/Movie industry so I was nervous and excited to see who we could get a glimpse of. To be honest I was 100% there to scope out Ryan Gosling (I have the tiniest biggest crush on the man and I was totally stoked to be in the same city as him), but I was excited in general to be amongst some major celebrities!

A tiny tidbit about myself before we move on is that I have been head-over-heals obsessed with anything and everything entertainment, celebrities and music all of my life. My mother was always telling me to be realistic and not fantasize about it all the time. Funny thing is, I still am crazy about it after all these years and if I ever get the chance to work in the business (on the writing/journalism/media end of things) I will consider it my dream/passion come true! So if anybody out there needs a grunt, admin, researcher...I'm available!!

Anyways, back to business. We stuck around the Bell Light Box (which is TIFF headquarters), The Ritz-Carleton Hotel, and Roy Thompson Hall/Princess of Wales where they were known for celebrity sightings during the day/evenings - and we weren't wrong! Just walking by the back end of the Bell Light Box we spotted a tv crew and a mysterious van. Not too long after that the one and only Snoop Lion (uh, aka Snoop Dogg?) step out of the vehicle and into the building. While he didn't stop to talk to anyone going in, he took to twitter to tweet his doings while waiting for his press conference to start.

The Ritz-Carleton was full of celebrities and I'm sure we only saw less than an 1/8th of the entire hotel. While we did spot some amazing actors/actresses we had yet to see Gosling (oh yes, I'm totally going back there). It's hard to write about all of them in sentences so here's a list of who we saw at the Ritz:

- Andy Samberg (aka first well know for being on Saturday Night Live - he's super cute btw)
- Viggo Mortenson (I was excited for this - first thing I squealed was that he's from Lord of the Rings haha)
- Fran Dresher (ya know, from The Nanny! I grew watching her!)
- Kate Hudson (only had a glance as she had her little baby with her)
- David Spade
- Numerous directors/producers (I'm assuming - I believe we saw one who was later on at the after-party for The Place Beyond the Pines).

We headed over to the red carpet for Roy Thompson Hall and The Princess of Wales to catch a glimpse of even more celebs! These were the main theatres so they had the most action so it was definitely awesome to be apart of such a big crowd and event. While we were at Roy Thompson we managed to see the likes of Bryan Cranston (anybody watch Breaking Bad?), just a tiny glimpse of Jennifer Garner and of course the wonderful (and super amazingly friendly) Ben Affleck! At first we thought Ben would skip our side (as they were trying to push him into the media tent) but he came our way and we were like inches away from him! I even managed an autograph of my He's Just Not That Into You DVD cover along with the comment "Woah, haven't seen this one in awhile!". To be honest I was going to bring another cover but it had both Bradley Cooper AND him so I thought I'd kill two birds with one stone! Too bad I never saw Bradley Cooper haha.

Then *deep breaths* we headed over to the Princess of Wales to...wait for it... see Ryan Gosling!! Sadly I only got a brief glimpse of his beautiful face, but it was just enough that I was able to breath in the same air. I'm sure all of the other girls felt the same way but still...I was stoked! He was looking dapper as always and while it was only for a second, it definitely made my night (other than Ben Affleck of course!).

So you can probably get the picture as to how the rest of the evening went. We went back to the hotel, the back to the red carpet at Roy Thompson (this time to see Alexander Skarsgard and Julianne Moore), and then back to the hotel - with a trip to Starbucks and Boston Pizza in between. Oh and went back to the Princess of Wales to catch Amy Adams,  and Joaquin Phoenix, at their premier of The Master.

 Nearing the end of the night we got word that Ryan and Bradley Cooper (who are castmates on The Place  Beyond the Pines) - thanks Twitter! - were at a local restuarant/bar for their after-party. So, as dedicated stalkers...I mean hunters, we headed over to Ame to see if those beautiful boys would make an appearance. Unfortunately they didn't *sadface*, but it was interesting just the same to see who else we could spot. We did end up seeing the director of the film as well as one of the other actors Dane DeHann.

Sadly that was the end of our long day/night but it was a blast none the less!

TIFF runs from September 7th until the 13th so there is still plenty of chances for you to go and find your own celebrity experiences! The first weekend is the biggest for the stars but there are PLENTY to go around! Plus, if you're a Cineplex SCENE card holder you can save money and get TIFF tickets for as little as $12 dollars a ticket! That's awesome!! (Tickets regularly start around $19.99 and go up to around $40!)

Two: Jesse Labelle Releases Second Album

Okay so this is a long time in the making but as I've had little time over the last few weeks (started a new job position which is taking up a LOT of my time lately), it's been kind of hard to keep this site up-to-date!

SO! That being said, I spoke to Canadian cutie Jesse Labelle a few weeks back as part of his promotion of his new album Two. After listening to it numerous times (and still listening to it obviously) I have got to say that it is a fantastic piece of work!

It took a little over two years and and two attempts but he finally released an album that he was proud of. He said in our interview, "The record label didn't think the first one I wrote was quite right so I had to re-write a second second version and that became “Two”.  After I wrote it I was so proud and so happy with it and I was glad I had the opportunity to write it again."

The writing process was a lot shorter this time around and the album itself is more about getting back to who he is. While his first album Perfect Accident was written over a span of seven years (from the ages of 18 to 26), this time around it was an album that was more cohesive and something that suited who he is now.

"The record is all about human interactions and both sides and connections. It’s really about the good, the bad, the ups, and downs. It starts with an honest and happy song and it ends with a kind of sad song...I really believe it does have a beginning, middle and an end."

You start with an emotionally powerful and heart-tugging song that is full of hope and promise. "Let You Down". This one is probably my favourite off of this album. The line that got to me the most would have had to be "There's two to every story; two sides of a heart. One that fears the ending, and one that fears the start". It may only be 21 words long  but it probably has the most impact. 

The song that seemed the most playful had to be "One Last Night". While playing up the romantic side of the "impending" end of the world in December, he still manages to make it light-hearted and fun. I really liked the fact he added a rap portion of the song by featuring artist Nixon. It was a nice contrast and made the song just a little bit different than the rest of the album - it was a nice touch!

Other noteworthy songs (in my books anyways) would have to be "Something to Feel" and "Kryptonite". The lyrics are special and I believe a lot of people are able to connect with them. I definitely give this album two thumbs up and I look forward to seeing Jesse perform live in the near future!

Q&A with Canadian Cutie Jesse Labelle

So I talked to the one and only Jesse Labelle earlier today and while I have an article on the go for  Suite101.com, I figured I would post the Q&A portion of if here for you all to see! Our interview was short and sweet (he probably wasn't used to that but I didn't want to take up too much of his busy schedule) but he had some really great things to say.

While it was only for 15 minutes I got a good sense of who he was as a person and an artist. I know that a lot of people put their favourite musicians and bands on pedestals (I admit it, I do from time to time) but in the end they are really just normal people. I hope you get the sense of it to as you read on!

(p.s. I tried to get this as true as to what Jesse said. As it was a phone interview I had no recording device so I had to type as fast as I possibly could!)

Taryn: Hi Jesse! How have you been?

Jesse Labelle: Been busy, early mornings long days, and late nights but it’s been fun.

T: How does it feel to be releasing your second album finally? Did you face any obstacles before the release?

J: Not really, but there is an interesting story. It’s actually the second second album I did. The record label didn’t think the first one I wrote was quite right so I had to re-write a second second version and that became “Two”.  After I wrote it I was so proud and so happy with it and I was glad I had the opportunity to write it again.

T: If you compared your first album “Perfect Accident” to your new one, what would you say the main differences would be?

J: It is completely different album. It was written from the time I was 18 until 26. There was long time in between and a lot of things happened. “Perfect Accident” was about me chasing my influences. This one I really wanted to go originality over influence. Ninety per cent of “Two” was written over the piano – over the keys. Has a sound that is is closer to my own sound. I mean every artist wants an album that sounds like who they are and I think this album has touched on that.

T: What has the writing process been like? Was it easier the second time around compared to your first?

J: It was a lot different and I included a lot of co-writers.  For my first album I only had one other co-writer. With “Two” I started to believe in strength in numbers and I really wanted to get the opinions of others. The writing process was a lot more intuitive and happened over a lot shorter period of time and  it was a lot more cohesive.

T: Everybody has their favourites (like mine are Won't Let you Down and Some to Feel) but what song or songs off of “Two” are your favourites?

The first song Won’t Let You Down, is definitely my favourite. I put it first because it’s the purest and most honest song on the record and I wanted everybody to be able to listen to it and feel that. I also wanted to let them know where I planned to take the music.

T: What’s the story behind One Last Night? Do you believe the world is going to end in December?

J: *laughs* I honestly don’t know. I mean you’ll never really know. I kinda like to live my life as if the world is going to end every day. Things pop up and things happen but you just have to go with it. This song is about living for the moment and making it count.

T: Heartbreak Cover-Up is about a personal experience right? What do you do to pick up the pieces of a broken heart?

J: Pretty much what’s in the song. That’s really where that song came from, having a broken heart and having the emotions that go along with it. Pretty much everybody has a way to deal like this, unless you’re too young and don’t have the card. They’re only emotions you can make because you’re grown up (talking about drinking Patron). That’s what I have done in the past. I haven’t had a broken heart in a long time and I don’t really want one of those again. They’re no fun to deal with and nobody should have to feel like that.

T: You also worked with Alyssa Reid on Heartbreak Cover-Up. Is there any other collaborations you’d like to do in the future?

J: There are tons, I mean there are so many people I would love to work with.  I’d really like to work with Ryan Tedder from One Republic. I really like his style and what he does. I’d also love to write a song with Rob Thomas - that’s always been a goal of mine. When it comes to collaborating with artists – this is going to sound crazy – but I would like to sing with Bono. I know it’s a little out there, but I would love to collaboration where would just share the song.

T: After reading your bio I got the vibe that you’re a bit of a romantic? How would you get the attention of the girl you like?

J: Yeah a little bit, I can be at times *pauses*. Wow, that’s a good question. I guess there are lots of different ways. I mean it really depends on the girl. I guess though that to get her attention I would give her attention.

T: You also mentioned in your bio that you’re trying to tell a story from beginning to end with “Two”. Do you feel that you accomplished this?

J: Yeah, I mean the record is all about human interactions and both sides and connections. It’s really about the good, the bad, the ups, and downs. It starts with an honest and happy song and it ends with a kind of sad song. But I really believe that it does have a beginning, middle and an end.

T: Can fans look forward to a tour anytime soon?

J: We’re working on it! I mean the summer doesn’t really have an opportunity for shows but we’re working on some shows for the fall. There should be an announcement soon about it.

T: Do you have any other projects on the go that you’re excited about?

J: I’m doing a ton of writing right now; so much. I’m working with a bunch of bands and artists. I’m helping with Alyssa Reid’s new album and as of yesterday a band called Bangarang. I’m really just looking to write with as many people as possible.

T: If you could tour with anyone, who would it be?

J: That’s a great question. It’s so hard to choose as there are so many amazing artists out there that I would love to tour with. I would be happy touring with anyone really. I would totally choose U2.  Or even Coldplay as they are like the U2 of this generation.

T: What favourite playlist could we find on your iPod/mp3 player at this exact moment?

J: I love Of Monsters and Men – they’re great. I really like the Frank Ocean album, and Collective Soul. I love them so much and always find that I am going back and listening to them. I mean I could really go on, I’m a lover of all kinds of music.


After all of this I want to thank Jesse for taking the time out of his schedule to talk to little ol' me. I wish him all the best with his new album and I hope to hear from him a LOT more! You'll be sure to see me at one of his up-coming concerts if one of them happens to be in the Toronto or GTA!

Vans Warped Tour 2012: Toronto

As with most people in the world, as soon as somebody looks at me they judge. It's almost human nature and something to expect even before you meet. That being said, I am often judged by my taste in music. Even my best friend raises her eyebrows sometimes when I go "Oh I know them! I really like it!" and it's classified screamo music. So when people see that I go to Warped  Tour (this year would be my third time running), they find it very hard to believe. While Warped has gradually centered towards one genre of music lately, they still have some amazing bands that tour year after year.

I must admit, the bands and musicians are not usually what I listen to on a daily basis but, for the love of music, I am a true fan of anything that sounds good. Yes some may have screaming, and some may have a country twang, while others are upbeat and bubblegum and mellow , I think it's safe to say that I listen to absolutely everything! 

July 15, 2012 was an eventful day for Warped Tour promoters and goers alike. With a change of venue creating a little chaos to begin with for veteran Warped fans, the heat alert, torrential downpour and thunderstorm, and the death of a fellow music lover, the day was far from uneventful. Everything that could go wrong for a travelling summer music festival, did go wrong. But in the true spirit of music and all things good - the show must go on. And it did. 

I am a fan in general of music festivals. I love the feeling you get being surrounded by thousands of people who are there for the same reason. I love seeing people get ecstatic about finally seeing their favourite bands for the first time and seeing the looks on the musicians faces when they realize that fans actually love what they do. It gives me chills to realize that they're still so humbled by the many faces that come and cheer them on and sing their lyrics word-for-word. It's a beautiful feeling!

Because of said events, my partner-in-crime Jenny Ellis and I stuck it out on the two Kia stages for the majority of the day. It was easiest to bounce around between two stages in the same area then it was to keep moving back and forth all across the grounds of Ontario Place. Plus with the unexpected death of a young woman, they shut down and rescheduled bands who were supposed to play on the Monster stage.

First up on our agenda for photo-taking was Memphis Mayfire. And while I may not have enjoyed the screaming (I have sensitive ears) I appreciate their mad skills and beautiful looks. These guys had a HUGE crowd and they knew how to rock it and rock it hard. With burly security at our backs we took some fabulous pictures and then retreated to the side of the stage to watch the mass of crowd surfers skim the crowd. It's amazing at how graceful they can look even though they're sweaty dirty and sometimes even hurt!

Next up was Four Year Strong. Jumping from a screamo/post-hardcore sound to a more hard-rock was a little bit of a relief. I could take a listen to the lyrics while we were snapping photos and that made me happy because why be at a concert if you can't enjoy the music! Right? While the genres were different, these guys still had a crowd and a great vibe. They were having fun and so was the crowd. These guys are veterans of Warped as well as in the music industry and their professionalism showed. They were catchy and had a great beat. And to top it off, they probably had the best drum set that I saw all day. I mean who wouldn't love a jaws inspired drum set?

All Time Low has been a band that I've been following since they played a semi-small venue in Toronto. And while they've become a little more mainstream than their previous albums, I was still stoked to be able to get up close and personal with them - even if it were only for three songs. Their songs are catchy and upbeat and have meaning to more than a few kids who've listened to them in the past and present. Their "Hustlers" as they call their dedicated fans proved to be the most heartbroken when they heard of the passing of a fellow hustler at Warped Tour. Taylor (the 19-year-old woman who suddenly passed away during the event) was a huge fan of the band and it broke their hearts. And while they had no idea at the time, they managed to put on a fantastic set for their Canadian fans. Oh and as an afterthought: These boys have some sexy guitars. Seriously.

We The Kings was on the same level when it came to the pop-rock sound. I listened to them briefly when I was younger but they never stayed long on my iPod. Their music was fun to dance around to and had a similar upbeat sound. I love the lead singers beautiful ginger hair. That along with his glasses and outfit, he reminded me of somebody you would have seen in the era of the Beatles. Too bad their music didn't mirror the Beatles because that would have been an amazing performance.

Right after We the Kings is when the weather became rather sketchy and windy. We took this opportunity to meet up with another friend of mine and to grab some food. While we checked out a very brief set from Frankie Whyte and the Dead Idols, that's when the rain came - and it came down hard. They ended up opening the  Molson Amp to the concert goers as it was the only stable and covered shelter we could all sit in and wait out the storm. While it was an hour wasted, it was amusing all the same. People crowd surfed in a dingy and we sang O Canada. In true  Canadian spirit most of us waited out the rain and had a little fun while doing so.

After the rain subsided and the main sets cut to 20 minutes a piece (to their regular 45), everything kick-started again and the music resumed. We went back to the main stages for the old-time favourites and to have a good time. Anti-Flag was the first to hit the Kia stages and boy were they amazing. This was their very last show of Warped Tour and they went out with a bang. Their music was catchy, the lyrics had some definite meaning and they rocked the crowd. From those getting squished at the front barricades to the ones who ran back for more crowd surfing, Warped Tour went on as planned as if the rain didn't happen.

Yellowcard was next on stage and I have to say they were probably my favourite performance of the day. Even though I didn't know any of the words the music spoke for itself. These music veterans knew what they were doing and fans loved them. I'm always up to finding new tunes to add to my iPod and Yellowcard definitely made a spot on my playlist. I definitely enjoyed them and while their set was only 20 minutes long they still managed to make the crowd very happy.

Breathe Carolina was on afterwards and these guys are also super catchy and hard not to love. While they do have a bit of screamo in their songs, they're mostly and upbeat techno-pop sound and they're super fun to dance to. Decked out in Toronto Maple Leafs gear and praising Canada, these guys had a major following as well. They were appreciative of those who stuck out the rain and rocked to the crowd like nothing ever happened. With the fab sounds and the fact they rocked Leafs gear, I was a pretty happy girl.

The last two bands of our night were old time favourites that attracted fans of all ages but a lot from my actual age group. As I grow older I feel like an old maid attending Warped Tour but these two bands made it easy to relate. While I wasn't into this type of music as teen, I can relate with the music as my fellow listeners did (and still do). New Found Glory and Taking Back Sunday were staples in my friends discmans  when we were in high school. They danced around and took the lyrics to heart just like any teen who's in love with their bands. They both rocked out hard and and sang to their hearts content.

All in all the day went well and I was sun burnt and exhausted. While there were some major downs (like the rain the poor set up of the grounds and the poor girl), almost everybody came out happy. Warped Tour year three is over and while the tour is officially complete for 2012 they are constantly updating their twitter and posting pictures.

Let's Go to the Ex, Oh Baby!

While most of us don't want to admit it, the summer of 2012 is quickly dissipating into thin air, or so it seems. With days full of hot (super HOT) weather and delicious ice cream, it's hard not to get caught up in the moment and not realize that these wonderfully warm days are passing us by!

August is only 11 days away which means that this year's Canadian National Exhibition (aka the CNE or The Ex!) team is getting ready to open its doors to thousands of eager patrons starting August 17th. With so many activities to do, games to play, food to eat, and amazing deals to find, there is always something for everyone from the ages of one to 99.

Some new attractions to look for this year:

 CNE Sky Ride - This ride extends over 40 ft above ground (at it's highest point) and riders will be elevated into thin air and moved across the CNE grounds. This ride will allow patrons to get a "bird's eye view" of the entire area including a view of Lake Ontario, the Toronto islands and of course the wonderful city skyline.


Zip Line - Riders will elevated and then be securely harnessed before zip-lining down to the ground. (side note: I am personally excited about this! I cant' wait to try it out!)


Performances to look forward to:

Acrobatics and Ice Show - featuring Scott Moir and Tessa Virtue. The duo were Olympic Gold Medalists in Vancouver 2010 and are this year's 2012 World Championship Gold Medalists. They will be performing for the first 15 days of the CNE. For Labour Day weekend, Elvis Stojko returns for the final three days of the show.

Nick Carter ft. Andrew Allen - Nick Carter will be sure to draw a crowd on August 19th, especially after the announcement the Backstreet Boys made earlier this week stating a temporary reunion with all five members creating a new album and a world tour. Though Nick will be by himself, it's sure to be a good time full of girls screaming and probably fainting with his notorious boy band moves.

Boogie Wonderland - Lace up those platform dancing shoes, squeeze into those bell bottom jeans and tease your hair because the 70s are back! Enjoy this 10-piece band playing I will Survive, Jungle Boogie, That's the Way I Like It, Love the Nightlife, It's Raining Men, and more on August 21st! It doesn't matter what generation you come from, you can't deny a little disco love!

Arkells ft. The Darcys - A band that is known for their love of Hall and Oates, this rock band often gets compared to the likes of Bruce Springsteen). These Hamilton rockers won Group of the Year (beating out Canadian favourites Nickelback and Hedley) at the Junos and just came back from a big tour south of the border. Performing hits like Michigan Left, Kiss Cam, The Ballad of Hugo Chavez and John Lennon among others, this show is one you do not want to miss. Check them out at the band shell on August 29th! (side note: I just started listening to these guys a few weeks ago and I am super pumped to see them live at the CNE. This is one show I am not going to miss!)

Vans Warped Tour: Toronto 2012 Picks

It's finally here! Vans Warped Tour is finally stopping in Toronto and tomorrow is the day!

Going on my third year of attendance (I started VERY late in the game, as I'm 26), I seem to be a little bit older than the average goer to this event. Overlooking that fact, I am very excited for tomorrow's extravaganza and so I have decided to post my top ten picks I hope to catch on stage at The Flats at The Molson Amphitheatre in Toronto! And just a reminder, the event venue has CHANGED. While it was held at The International Centre (The Flats also) in Mississauga over the past years, they have moved it to a much larger venue, the main stage actually being the Molson Amp.


Anyways, on to my Top Ten!


10. Four Year Strong - I listened to these guys the other day and I enjoyed their solid rock sound. I've heard of them before but I never really took the time to listen to their music. I am looking forward to hearing what they've got on stage!


9.  Sleeping with Sirens - As I was doing my pre-Warped preparation (I'm anal like that) I came across this band's new EP If Your Life was as Movie, This Would Be Your Soundtrack. I was instantly attracted to the vocals. I love how they put a theme to their EP and stuck with it. I went onto listen to their newest album release, Let's Cheers to This, and while this album isn't as "soft" as their new EP, it was catchy and interesting. I look forward to hearing them onstage! 


8. Ten Second Epic - I'm all for the support of Canadian bands and I haven't seen these guys play since 2008 (ish), and it was in a church in Milton Ontario. They have always been upbeat and I look forward to hearing what they have been up to over the past couple years!

7. Frankie Whyte and the Dead Idols - Another crazy good, female-fronted band who knows how to rock it out. A band who opened for Bon Jovi in Toronto, this band has a some hardcore experience when it comes to rocking out on stage. With solid lyrics and wicked guitar skills, I'm excited to finally see them live!

6. You Me At Six - I saw these guys two years ago when they played Warped 2010, so I'm looking forward to hearing some of their new stuff. Listening to "Stay with Me" as we speak, I like the pure rock vibe they have. They kind of remind me of Three Days Grace and Nickelback. Now I could be completely off, but I guess we'll truly find out tomorrow!

5. Taylor Thrash - Another random find when I was doing my "research", I found that he reminded me a little of Olly Murs. Now if anybody knows of Olly Murs, he was recently on tour with One Direction - which means he's got "young fans" written all over him. But if you're into pop music with light happy tunes, then I think you'll enjoy the sound of Taylor Thrash.

4. We Are The In Crowd - These guys have been on my radar (via twitter and Facebook) for quite some time now but I never really gave them a good listen. I took the time last night and they are yet another pop-rock band that has a fun vibe about them. I think they're an easy listen and their songs will stick in your head.


3. Mayday Parade - I have been a fan since 2007/2008 and I am always curious to hear how they have improved over the years. They are definitely no strangers to Warped and they always bring in a good crowd. Their lyrics, while still teen angst-y, are catchy and easy to remember. These guys are usually one of the bands who gets a lot of sing-along moments in the crowd - and I love that!

2. All Time Low - I caught these guys opening for Simple Plan in March and it'll be good seeing them in an up-close setting instead of from the stands. As much as I enjoyed seeing them in a big venue, ATL is not a band that I'd want to see from a far. They're catchy, upbeat and a bunch of cuties. Can't wait!

1. Taking Back Sunday - When I was in high school, the majority of my music had to do with either country artists or boy bands. While Taking Back Sunday was popular with many of my fellow classmates, I never really got into it because I didn't start liking indie/rock/pop bands/music until the tail end of my h.s. career. Taking a listen now though I find that they're extremely likable and I am looking forward to jumping on the bandwagon - even if it is almost 10 years too late.

There you have it! My top 10 for this year's Warped Tour in Toronto! There would have been a few more on there had they managed to get their butts to Canada (some legal issues I assume), but alas, I am disappointed! Maybe next time around we'll get to check out The Used, It Boys and Falling in Reverse!
