It's finally here! Vans Warped Tour is finally stopping in Toronto and tomorrow is the day!
Going on my third year of attendance (I started VERY late in the game, as I'm 26), I seem to be a little bit older than the average goer to this event. Overlooking that fact, I am very excited for tomorrow's extravaganza and so I have decided to post my top ten picks I hope to catch on stage at The Flats at The Molson Amphitheatre in Toronto! And just a reminder, the event venue has CHANGED. While it was held at The International Centre (The Flats also) in Mississauga over the past years, they have moved it to a much larger venue, the main stage actually being the Molson Amp.
Anyways, on to my Top Ten!
10. Four Year Strong - I listened to these guys the other day and I enjoyed their solid rock sound. I've heard of them before but I never really took the time to listen to their music. I am looking forward to hearing what they've got on stage!
9. Sleeping with Sirens - As I was doing my pre-Warped preparation (I'm anal like that) I came across this band's new EP If Your Life was as Movie, This Would Be Your Soundtrack. I was instantly attracted to the vocals. I love how they put a theme to their EP and stuck with it. I went onto listen to their newest album release, Let's Cheers to This, and while this album isn't as "soft" as their new EP, it was catchy and interesting. I look forward to hearing them onstage!
8. Ten Second Epic - I'm all for the support of Canadian bands and I haven't seen these guys play since 2008 (ish), and it was in a church in Milton Ontario. They have always been upbeat and I look forward to hearing what they have been up to over the past couple years!
7. Frankie Whyte and the Dead Idols - Another crazy good, female-fronted band who knows how to rock it out. A band who opened for Bon Jovi in Toronto, this band has a some hardcore experience when it comes to rocking out on stage. With solid lyrics and wicked guitar skills, I'm excited to finally see them live!
6. You Me At Six - I saw these guys two years ago when they played Warped 2010, so I'm looking forward to hearing some of their new stuff. Listening to "Stay with Me" as we speak, I like the pure rock vibe they have. They kind of remind me of Three Days Grace and Nickelback. Now I could be completely off, but I guess we'll truly find out tomorrow!
5. Taylor Thrash - Another random find when I was doing my "research", I found that he reminded me a little of Olly Murs. Now if anybody knows of Olly Murs, he was recently on tour with One Direction - which means he's got "young fans" written all over him. But if you're into pop music with light happy tunes, then I think you'll enjoy the sound of Taylor Thrash.
4. We Are The In Crowd - These guys have been on my radar (via twitter and Facebook) for quite some time now but I never really gave them a good listen. I took the time last night and they are yet another pop-rock band that has a fun vibe about them. I think they're an easy listen and their songs will stick in your head.
3. Mayday Parade - I have been a fan since 2007/2008 and I am always curious to hear how they have improved over the years. They are definitely no strangers to Warped and they always bring in a good crowd. Their lyrics, while still teen angst-y, are catchy and easy to remember. These guys are usually one of the bands who gets a lot of sing-along moments in the crowd - and I love that!
2. All Time Low - I caught these guys opening for Simple Plan in March and it'll be good seeing them in an up-close setting instead of from the stands. As much as I enjoyed seeing them in a big venue, ATL is not a band that I'd want to see from a far. They're catchy, upbeat and a bunch of cuties. Can't wait!
1. Taking Back Sunday - When I was in high school, the majority of my music had to do with either country artists or boy bands. While Taking Back Sunday was popular with many of my fellow classmates, I never really got into it because I didn't start liking indie/rock/pop bands/music until the tail end of my h.s. career. Taking a listen now though I find that they're extremely likable and I am looking forward to jumping on the bandwagon - even if it is almost 10 years too late.
There you have it! My top 10 for this year's Warped Tour in Toronto! There would have been a few more on there had they managed to get their butts to Canada (some legal issues I assume), but alas, I am disappointed! Maybe next time around we'll get to check out The Used, It Boys and Falling in Reverse!
If you want to keep updated on my shenanigans please follow me @TarynMcElheran! I'll be posting pictures and tweets throughout the day!

Faber Drive to Release Lost In Paradise August 28th
That's right you read correctly! Faber Drive's long anticipated third album Lost in Paradise will be released at the end of August!
Being a long time supporter of the band and a friend, it makes me proud to see that they've finally accomplished this album! It's a huge deal and I'm super excited to listen to it when the time comes!
Everybody get excited!!
Oh and if you're in the Toronto area be sure to come and check them out at Dundas Square on July 21st for a FREE show!
While you're "patiently" waiting, check out this wicked fan-based lyric video for their most recent single "Candy Store"! Oh and while your at it, be sure you call your local radio stations and bug the crap out of them until they play the song! It's catchy, it's sweet and it's full of puns! What's not to love? It's definitely on my summer playlist!
(Notice anything special around the 2:42 mark?! wink wink)

S.C.E.N.E. Fest 2012
I've been a loyal fan of the S.C.E.N.E. Music Festival (@scenefest) for over five years now, and as a media guest for the last three of those five. I have never come out disappointed with the event and it continues to amaze me at how organized the committee and crew are when it comes to executing a smooth day. Yes there have been years where they've hit some snags, really bad weather, or rowdy crowds, but they have always been calm, professional and friendly when it came to such matters - and this year was no different. For the first time (to my knowledge) they set up not one but TWO stages at Market Square (the main venue and where all the bands set up their merch) and had a 19+ area that was sponsored by Jager. And while this was a little foreign (being this my fifth year running) having two stages, I quite enjoyed the set-up (and the drinks).
SCENE is a 12+ hour affair that starts at noon and continues into the wee hours of the morning. Hosting bands from all over the province, Canada and even some from the States, there is always a band and/or venue that will have something for everybody's ears. Canadian favourites Down With Webster made an appearance for the third time in Scene history and they did one heck of a show.
Here's a list and a short review of who I managed to catch at this year's S.C.E.N.E. festival 2012:
First up was Wesley James good ol' Saint Catharines, Ontario. Not originally on my list to check out, I was pleasantly surprised when I checked him and his band out. At first listen he kind of reminded me of an edgier Illscarlett (see review below) but after listening for awhile he began to create his own sound (in my mind). With a bit of everything mixed in, it's hard to specify a certain genre of music. With everything from Dub, Ska, and Rock to a little bit of Folk and then some. What was easy to determine though was the passion he felt towards his music and performances. He even had family in the crowd that was bouncing along to the music and looked just as proud. James and his band is definitely work having a listen! Check them out on Facebook or on his website to get more information and hear some music!
We mainly stuck around the main stage this year as it was easiest and where most of the action was happening. Next up we enjoyed the musical talent of Care Failure and her band Die Mannequin (@DMannequin). Girl fronted bands are more common than most people think and they usually pack a powerful punch when it comes to the words and music performed on stage. Care was no different and she managed to wow her audience with her powerful chords and stage presence. Her sexy rough-edged voice mixed with her sharp and angst-filled lyrics made for an interesting performance. After being dropped from their former label Warner, they had reason to let out their emotions in their music. Mixing it up with old favourites with new songs off their recently released EP Danceland, Ms. Failure and her band made a great way to start off this year's 17th Annual S.C.E.N.E. Music Festival! Check out Die Mannequin's Facebook page to find out more info on the band!
With a couple of hours to spare on the main stage, we wandered the downtown streets of St. Catharine's and found a band that went by the name of Searching for Satellites at the wonderful Red Hot Chili Pepper. While not a band I normally listen too, I was intrigued by their name and their style of music. A mix of singing and screaming, it was a combination that seems to be popular with the younger crowds. I definitely enjoyed the show and thought they did a the combination of singing and screaming quite well. Didn't help that they were quite the lookers either!
We then made are way over to Rockford's. A tiny bar that barely fits in the band let alone the fans, but all the same is still cozy and intimate. I've been listening to Brighter Brightest (@BrightrBrightst) on and off for the last couple of years and I've always liked what I've heard. The last time I saw them they were heading a Skate4Cancer event in my hometown. They even went as far as showing us ladies how to do a self-breast exam. Amazing right? Anyways, their catchy upbeat songs are the big reason why I enjoy their music and watching them perform. Playing new songs off their recently released album Right for Me like "Everyday" and "Right for Me" while still keeping it real by mixing it in with old favourites and probably the best cover ever of Wave's "California". I don't know about you but part of my childhood consisted of listening to Wave on repeat. That was a great blast from the past! You can catch Brighter Brightest on their "Tourlympics" tour this summer across Canada! For more information be sure to check out their Facebook page!
Before the next choice band, we had some time to spare so we searched out the world famous Smokes Poutinery and decided to eat some delicious Canadian staple food. We then went to support our lovely friends of Illscarlett while they tried to raise some money Busking for Change for Warchild - a wonderful charity that helps children in war torn countries all over the world. As per usual they were pretty damn good. I have to say I do enjoy them being acoustic. Then again, I think I enjoy every band more when they're doing acoustic. Call me crazy but I think it's sexy.
Rockford's seemed to be my only other choice venue this time around. Winnipeg band Take Me To The Pilot (@TMTTP) were performing and I could NOT miss it. A friend of mine introduced me to this band a few years ago and it's taken me that long in order to see them perform. I missed them by a hair at last year's CMW and that was only because they had a super late (or super early?) set time at 2 a.m. These guys have a special, airy like quality when it comes to their vocals and it captivates me every time I listen. Their songs are upbeat (even when sad) and I can't help but enjoy every aspect of their performance. I also managed to pick up their newly released EP What Makes You and it`s definitely one to listen to. The performance itself was flawless and even though they were probably on the tiniest stage possible they still managed to make a great time out of it and their Ontario fans definitely didn`t complain. While singing new songs off of their seven song EP, they also sang favourites like "Call the Cops", "I Was Alive for 15 Days in the 80s" and my personal fave "Green Eyes". They also managed to play off of their pals in Brighter Brightest and did their own version of Wave's "California" as well!

Our last stop of the night was to catch the last two performances of the night on the main stage at Market Square. Illscarlett (@Illscarlett) has been a crowd favourite all across Canada for years now. I remember seeing them for the first time live when I was in my second year of University back in 2007. They have produced, sang and toured multiple times since then and even added a stay in California. As of recent they have dropped their record label and are currently in the process of writing, and recording their self-produced EP that will be released in August of this year. These guys always give an energy packed performance that allows the crowd to just release their energy. In fact, out of all the Ill shows that I have seen in the past, there is not one show that has not had a pit take over the audience. Pretty sure there were a few times where the security guards had to step in because they were harming other fans in the area. Because they haven't released an album or EP in awhile they mainly stuck to tunes that I was more than familiar with. Instead of focusing on the lyrics I was just able to get into the music and bob my head along to the beat. If you don't enjoy an Ill show, then there's got to be something wrong with you right?

I always have such a great time at S.C.E.N.E. and this year was no exception. As a lover of music, outdoor festivals and being with friends, this was the perfect summer kick-off and I look forward to working with them in the future!

Oh on a side note, friends and I discovered this not so appealing sticker on someone's car that stated "No Fat Chicks Allowed". Obviously we were offended but we went on about our day. Turns out someone had been just as offended and managed to peel off the "No" part. Karma's a bitch isn't it?

Down With Webster (@DOWNWITHWEBSTER) has been around for more than a couple of years. they started off as a basement band where nobody really heard them and now they've become a Canada and State wide phenomenon. Toronto boys born and bred, these guys always have the crowd jumping and psyched to be in the crowd. Their unique mix of R&B, Rap and Rock&Roll make for a unique, one-of-a-kind show that will always leave your ears pleased. While their set was too short for my liking, they did a great mix of old and new songs off their albums Time to Win Vol.1 and Time to Win Vol.2. It's always a thrill to hear these guys perform live and to see the audience so wrapped up in each song. It's easy to relate to and something you don't hear every day on the radio (well except them of course). I've already seen them in Montreal this year and I'm excited to see them again whenever they come back. They are addictive, super cute and super catchy. If you haven't listened to them or have never heard of them before (I know I've got some non-Canadian readers out there) you should definitely check them out on their Facebook page to hear some music and find out more information on the band!

MMVA 2012: Likes and Dislikes
Well it looks as if another year of the MMVAs has successfully completed itself. For the second time in three years I wasn't accepted into the media room due to "high quantities" of people applying. In non-professional words they were pretty much telling me that I wasn't important enough to warrant and in-person invitation.
Anyways, I decided that I would just watch the show this year instead of spending countless hours watching a live feed and "trying" to get my questions answered over all the other journalists there in person. So, my thoughts? I felt that compared to last year's show, this one was a lot more successful than before. And by successful I mean that the music SOUNDED great on TV, and the performances (for the most part) were really well done. The only issue I had didn't really have anything to do with the actual award show itself.
Things I liked:
- LMFAO's co-hosting duties and performance were 100 % above par. They were hilarious, they sounded great and they interacted with the crowd and the other presenters extremely well.
- Carly Rae Jepsen's performance and surprise performance with Flo Rida. She has shot up SO fast over the last year and she has thanks to Justin Bieber and his label for that. I remember seeing this shy girl in a mall with Faber Drive in Port Coquitlam way back in 2009. Since then she's blossomed into a quirky girl who can make every celebrity and fan sing religiously to "Call Me Maybe"
- I know I may be a little biased, but I felt that Hedley's performance of "Kiss You Inside Out" was one of the best performances of the night. I think the only issue I had with this was the camera was pretty much trained on Jacob Hoggard the entire time. Note to Muchmusic cameramen: Hedley is a band. It's not Jacob Hoggard and the Hedley Boys.
- Katy Perry in general. She had such a cute walk down the red carpet with all the mini Katy Perry's and her set on stage was probably the most extravagant and beautiful. She did such a great job.
- Kelly Clarkson was the powerhouse of the night. It's crazy that she was the very FIRST person to ever win American Idol and she is still going strong.
- Lucy Hale. I love that girl. She's beautiful, funny, and I feel to be a great role model.
- Ed Sheerhan surprised me to no end. I didn't really even know who he was but then I listened to his performance and I was enthralled. His performance was hands down the best of the night. I think everybody should just go acoustic and belt it out. Then we'd be able to string out the real talent from the fakes.
Things I disliked:
- While everybody else just LOVED Marianas Trench's entrance, I felt that it was just a little obnoxious. Did they not get the memo that the theme was classy? Sorry, I am a HUGE Trench fan but they just seemed to irk me this time around. And continuing with the Trench theme, their performance was terrible. Sure people will probably say it sounded better in person, but with most of the other performances sounding great on TV, I highly doubt it. I know from experience that Josh has some bad singing days, and I'm guessing last night was one of them. Oops.
- Nelly Furtado. She looked gorgeous in that beautiful white dress, but that's where it stops. Her performance was lackluster and she sounded SO nasally. I had to turn down the volume at one point because her voice was annoying me. She should have surprised the audience with K'nann and sang their song together.
- Justin Bieber. Sorry but why hasn't he washed out yet?
- Okay, again this may sound a little mean, but why did Carly Rae have to win all the awards? Yes I get that you can't control the UR Faves, but what about the others? There were SO many talented bands and musicians out there that didn't get recognition because Carly was the one who "blew up" and became an international sensation. Muchmusic used to be about supporting ALL musicians, not just the ones who made big names for themselves.
So that's what I thought of this years awards. Please leave comments and opinions if you will. I know I'm bound to have some disagreements but hey, that's why I'm a blogger and you're the reader.

So that's what I thought of this years awards. Please leave comments and opinions if you will. I know I'm bound to have some disagreements but hey, that's why I'm a blogger and you're the reader.

MMVA 2012: Performers
Muchmusic has finally released this year's list of performers (or some of them anyways) so I am here to give you a quick update as to who you can expect to see on this year's stage!
So as we all know Katy Perry and LMFAO will be co-hosting this giant downtown party as well as performing their latest hits on stage!
Recently added to the performance roster includes the likes of Nelly Furtado, up-and-comer Carly Rae Jepsen, Marianas Trench, and the one and only Justin Bieber!!
When I covered the MMVAs in 2010, Marianas Trench AND Justin Bieber were both present and they've both become bigger than they ever have before! With MT performing from their November 2011 release and Justin promoting his newest album (set to be released the Tuesday after his MMVA performance), it seems like all you listeners/watchers/concert goers are all in for a genuine treat!
Nelly Furtado has been off the charts for awhile but she's recently released a new song "Big Hoops" and her new album titled "Spirits Indestructible" will be out sometime soon.

2012 MuchMusic Video Awards
It's official! Much has finally started to release details of the 2012 MMVAs and it definitely started on a high note!
They just announced recently (a few days ago give or take) that one of this year's performers will be the one and only Katy Perry!
Katy performed back on the MMVAs in 2010 so it'll be interesting to see how she amps up this year for her hundred (if not thousands? - can we be realistic?) of fans who will attend this years events!
Stay tuned for more info as more exciting news gets released!

Warped Tour 2012 Line-Up
The feature band this year that will be headlining most of the tour is The Used. No strangers to Warped Tour, there will sure to be a large crowd. The last time they were in Toronto they were performing before thousands at the ACC, so it'll be interesting to see the reaction at Warped. They just released a brand new album this past March so they'll more than likely perform an array of new and old tunes!
Other popular favourites will be New Found Glory, Taking Back Sunday and Yellowcard.
This year there is a skew of bands for everybody's taste. While Warped Tour typically showcases bands in the pop-punk-hardcore genre, you'll find an abundance of choice that will suit everybody's tastes.
There are way too many bands to mention (and as Warped Tour gets closer I'll focus more on individual bands), so right now I'm just going to list the faves that I'm excited to see!
All Time Low - Saw them open for Simple Plan this past February. The set was less than ideal at a total of 25 minutes. I need some more All Time Low!
Falling in Reverse - I never heard of these guys until my best friend introduced me to them. They're a little dark but the songs "Caught Like a Fly", "The Drug in Me" and "I'm not a Vampire" are pretty damn good!
Mayday Parade - I've been listening to Mayday ever since I heard them perform with All Time Low back in 2007/08. Their songs are pretty damn good and I can't wait to see them again.
Rise Against - A great rock band. Can't really say more than that.
Ten Second Epic - Followed these guys since they were virtually unknown. I think the last time I saw them perform was in a church for a charity event. They're Canadian and they're awesome!
The Used - My other best friend made The Used known to my ears. They're pretty awesome and her favourite band so that has to tell you something right!?
Taking Back Sunday - They've been around for years (upon years it seems) so I think you're going to find a lot of old time fans checking these guys out. A perfect punk-alternative sound, they're sure to please quite a few ears!
You Me at Six - First heard these guys at Warped tour in 2010. They're catchy and if it's not your type of music, just listen to them when they speak. Who doesn't enjoy listening to British accents? I sure do!
Tickets went on sale March 30th, so be sure to grab yours while you can!
Keep your eye on my blog for more Warped features on bands starting in late May/early June!

Let's Go to the Ex! Food, Fun and Marianas Trench
I always look forward to August because I know that the Canadian National Exhibition is once again holding up fort at the Exhibition grounds in Toronto. The Ex is virtually a staple of Ontario summers and a family tradition to many. There is always something for everyone and everyone has fun no matter what age you are. I've long grown out of the rides (...well, I will go on them, I just can't find anybody else who wants to go with me - heh), but I thoroughly enjoy walking the grounds, taking in the sound, the music, the shopping and the overall atmosphere.
We all know that the CNE is technically just an over-zealous version of your typical small-town small fall fair, but we also know that it`s so much more than that. It's a multi-cultural, family oriented gathering for people all over Ontario and Canada to get together to share memories and create more. I enjoy the time spent with friends, remembering our childhoods, eating deliciously bad food (aka deep fried "cola") that we'd never get away with on a regular day and listening to great music at the bandshell.
One of the main things I love about the Ex is the talent they schedule every year. Whoever is in charge of scheduling has a great mind and knows that in order to please a large variety of people, you need to be able to have a wide variety of talent on stage. They also are smart enough to know that kids, teens and young adults will also be the majority of the attendees when it comes to these events. I for one love the shows, the outdoor atmosphere and the fact that the stage isn't too big or gaudy.
Marianas Trench has been around for ages. I first heard of them when I was nearing the end of my high school career...and yes, that has been awhile ago now - thanks for reminding me. I remember hearing them sing a capella and I was floored. Their vocals were incredible, in tune and pleasing to the ear. Lead vocalist Josh Ramsay showed power and range that you really don't see in many singers these days. When Myspace was popular, I remember spending hours talking back and forth with Mike, their guitarist and having the most random conversations. And as much as I love who they've become, and how successful they've been when it comes to their music and song-writing, I miss those times. I miss being able to talk to them at a show for a half hour, I miss them recognizing you instantly and giving you a hug.
As you have probably guessed, I've seen Mtrench in concert quite a few times. And ever since I saw them play at the Commodore during Juno weekend in 2009, I've kind of been comparing their shows ever since. Their show in Vancouver was beyond amazing. The vocals were perfect, their stage presence was impeccable and their overall performance was beyond what most bands do. I will admit that mtrench hasn't had some great performances, but then again, no band is ever perfect - that's life. And with Josh having vocal troubles sometimes, it's completely understandable. The show at the Ex on August 21st, wasn't as good as the show in Vancouver but it was pretty darn close. I was able to remember those times in the past and just have fun. They were fun, the music was catchy and their new music was inspiring. I know for a fact they work their asses off to get the fans what they want and I am proud that they are able to do so still. Even though their new music is becoming more mainstream, I am still an avid fan and I hope they stick around for more great music.
The lone issue I seem to have lately with the band is that Josh never seems to come out and greet the fans after their shows. I can't pinpoint one time I've witnessed this because I've seen it numerous times. Maybe it's just my experiences but I've had a friend who's tried to meet him countless times and each time he's disappointed her as well as many others. Some see it as stand-offish and I see it as a little snobby. Again, maybe it was just my luck in the situations but I have heard other stories when he's been the most sincere person there is. I've seen that side of Josh and I love it, but I've also seen the side where he stands on the other side of the barriers smoking (...maybe THAT'S why you're having vocal troubles Josh? Just a thought...) and ignoring the adoring girls. The entire band is sweet natured and very humble so I just hope that what I've witnessed on numerous occasions was just flukes and because he was having bad days...Don't worry Josh, I still love you but I just had to say what was on my mind!

P.S. Keep your eyes open, I have another review of the TDSB show at the bandshell and my second day at the Ex coming up soon!

Canada D'eh 2011!
Phew! Sorry it took so long to get S.C.E.N.E. stuff up! Time sadly just got away from me!
Anyways, I have to say that Canada Day has got to be one of my favourite days of the year. I am 100 per cent proud to be Canadian and I love seeing so many people come together to celebrate a great nation's birthday! I realize (as is it is almost always the case) that events like these always seem to be a great deal when you are younger. I remember always going to the Glen (a neighbouring small community) to eat pancakes for breakfast, participate in the rubber ducky races and the annual Canada Day Parade. As I grew older I recall playing baseball (I could be wrong - I have a HORRIBLE memory haha). As I grew older we toned it down quite a bit but now that I am obviously of age that I can do whatever I please, I have always tried to find some kind music event to attend on this special day. These events are great for two reasons: 1) These events are usually free (unless you went to EdgeFest!) and 2) They showcase amazing Canadian talent to celebrate the day!
After spending the day relazing and getting ice cream at Murphy's in Streetsville, my step-sis and I eventually ventured to City Hall in Mississauga to take part in Canada Day festivities. Celebration Square is officially open after what seemed like years of construction and it was time to make use of it! And from what I heard, Mississauga celebrations were the biggest Canada Day celebrations outside of Toronto! And I can see that happening as it was packed with THOUSANDS of people by the end of the night!
Luckily I was once again able to catch These Kids Wear Crowns rock the stage. Decked out in Canada flags, Justin Beiber t=shirts and quirky outfits, they sang to a patriotic and excited crowd. As I saw them only a week before I thought I wouldn't be as interested but they sure know how to entertain a crowd and keep them entertained. Singing fan favourites "Jumpstart", "I Wanna Dance With Somebody", "Oceans" and "Skeletons" to name a few, they were extremely successful in pumping the crowd up and getting them ready for the rest of the night.
The only thing I would have to say that I disliked was the sound quality. While I'm not sure if it was because I was extremely close to the sound system or because it was just poorly executed, I just didn't seem to be able to hear it as good as it could have been. Take note Mississauga!
Next to take the stage was Fefe Dobson. She's been around since I was in high school (which in the music world is sometimes deemed to be a lifetime) and she's never really appealed to me all these years. With her new album Joy though, she has converted me - sort of. Although her performance was okay, her stage presence was a little awkward. To me it seemed a little forced. I also didn't like the fact she was late - for her own performance. I don't know the circumstances (could have been a bathroom emergency for all I know) but to me that was far from good musician etiquette.
(By this portion of the night, the crowd had multiplied by the thousands...just so you know)
Lastly, the one and only Shawn Desman hit the stage. While I have listened to Shawn since I was in high school (yes I'm bringing it up again - going on seven years later now) I had never really gotten the opportunity to see him perform live before. Well, unless you include the time he sang the national anthem at the Jay's game. I was thrilled when I heard he was in the lineup! While he mainly played new songs to the wild crowd, he did manage to go back down memory lane and play a few old favourites (which I gladly sang along loud and proud to). The overall performance was upbeat, energetic and extremely exciting. Oh, and not to mention the spectacular dance moves.
I have to say though, the best part of the night has to have been the fireworks. Tuned to music, these pretty fireworks lit up the sky and provided amusement to people of all ages. It seriously brings the kid out in me every time so I can only imagine what everybody else was feeling!
Proud to be Canadian!

The Little Black Dress/The Artist Life @ S.C.E.N.E. 2011
I am combining these last two as they were my my final two shows I caught during this year's S.C.E.N.E. The great thing about the GTA and Niagara music scene (or so I think anyways) is the fact that everybody knows everybody. You see so many bands become friends after playing countless shows together, touring or meeting other musicians through friends of friends. And The Little Black Dress and The Artist Life are no exceptions - they are great friends!
I had originally heard about The Little Black Dress through two different outlets - a friend and another band (well musician really), Jesse Labelle. I am always willing to check out new music, and The Little Black Dress was definitely worth checking out. I was instantly impressed by Dan Sadowski's unique voice and the tunes in general. I also liked the fact that the lyrics weren't as childish as you tend to find a lot of indie-pop bands to be. I find that these indie-pop bands tend to have a younger following and so the music is geared a little more towards them then the general public. The LBD's lyrics are honest and they aren't afraid to sing about sex and real life.
While nearing the end of the night we ended up in the small bar Mikado (which while it was on the "main strip" I still managed to get lost), to catch this great band. While the stage was small and the lights low, Dan and the rest of the guys still managed to have a great time. I loved the fact that Dan was barefoot on stage. It just made me feel like he was comfortable on stage and ready to have a great time while not worrying about cramped toes!
You can check out these guys on facebook, and twitter as well as pick up their EP on itunes! Great songs, great band and I had a great time watching them live! They're one to watch out for!
Now, in and around the same time, The Artist Life took to the stage at L3. The L3 is probably the venue I have visited most whenever I am in St. Kitt's and it's probably one of my favourites in general. I love the overall feel of the place and the atmosphere is always inviting. I was excited to finally be stepping back into the bar after quite an absence!
I had listened to TAL for quite some time thanks to an East coast friend (*cough* Thanks Nelle!) but I had never gotten the chance to see them perform live until this night. Their set was full of high energy, sweaty boys and a captivated crowd that seemed to enjoy the music just as much as they enjoyed creating it on stage. Sticking to songs mainly off their recently released album Impossible, they definitely kept the full crowd at L3 entertained.
Their new album itself is rather enjoyable and reminds me of Blink 182 mixed in with their own unique twist. I find myself listening to it as much as I can. It has most definitely become one of my favourite albums for the summer of 2011!
You can also find TAL on myspace, facebook and twitter and you can also pick up their new album Impossible on itunes and in stores!

U.S.S. at S.C.E.N.E.fest 2011
The first thing that comes to mind when describing U.S.S. is crazy. Up until this year's S.C.E.N.E.fest I had only ever heard of their crazy antics they got up to while on stage. This two man band has insane amounts of energy and they definitely know how to pump up a crowd. Ash (vocals/guitar), and Human Kabob (vocals/dj) have a unique blend of techniques that create an amazing combination of alternative and rock.
While I have never listened to their music beforehand, I was definitely enthralled. I was amazed at the consistency and their ability to get everybody pumped up for a good hour or more. And even though I didn't know any of the lyrics, I found myself repeating a lot of what they sang.
Headlining the Marketplace stage this year, they are definitely starting to create an impact on the Canadian music scene. With their constant touring, exposure on the radio and their two album releases, they are starting to become more and more well known. It makes me proud to hear great Canadian talent on the radio and making themselves known to greater audiences.
If you haven't heard their music I suggest you look them up now! And then you need to find out where they are performing near you and then check them out!
You can find U.S.S. on their website, facebook and even twitter!
That's it for now!

These Kids Wear Crowns @ S.C.E.N.E.fest 2011
Anybody who has gone to smaller shows and festivals and talked to the band knows it's no easy task to be a struggling musician. Their constant self-marketing, and endless touring can sometimes be tiring and super frustrating - but it can also pay off. These Kids |Wear Crowns, a once small town band from Chiliwack B.C., got an amazing opportunity to appear and compete to win top prize on MuchMusic's Disband and totally rocked it. It seemed for once a small town band's hard work had finally paid off. Finally getting noticed on a national scale, these six guys are working their butts off to impress music critics and fans a like. And while it took me awhile to warm up to their album, after seeing them live, I started to hear a whole different tune.
One of the many things that draws me into TKWC is their constant energy. Not going to lie, I am a sucker for bands who look like they are truly having a good time on stage. It is too often these days where bands will just stand there and sing. What's the point of paying good money and going to a show and seeing them stand there, when you can do that for the price of a CD at home? These guys are all over the stage, especially front-man Alex Johnson. At this year's S.C.E.N.E.fest that took place on June 26th, they definitely made it worthwhile to check out. Having seen them perform at Canadian Music Fest a few months earlier I already had high expectations and I was definitely not disappointed. Full of energy, excitement and fun, they rocked out to a full set and a great crowd.
The exceptional thing is they performed their high energy set on very little sleep (less so then the expected for musicians) all because of a mishap on their way from Montreal to St. Catharine's. As they explained on stage (and after their set to Zebraprintsky's Jenny ellis and I), they were on their way from their show in Quebec when their tire blew on the van in the wee hours of the morning. And if that weren't bad enough, their spare tire didn't fit and they had to wait until 8 a.m. before they could find a replacement!
"I take a cab 30 minutes back to our van, I put it on the van and we got here with 20 minutes to spare," said Alan Poettchker (vocals/guitar), during an interview with Jenny Ellis at S.C.E.N.E.
It's a good thing they made it on time!
One of my favourite parts of the sets (besides the obvious fun songs and dance tunes), was their cover (and recently released single) of "I Wanna Dance with Somebody". The Whitney Houston song is a classic to begin with but their twist on the song is fresh and really makes you want to dance. I honestly turn up the radio every time I hear it and to see it live is just that much better. Other songs performed were a mix between songs off their new album Jumpstart as well as off their first self-titled EP. Favourites included "Skeletons," "Jumpstart" and "Break it Up".
On a final note, I would like to mention how much I love the fact that the vocals are split up between Alex and Alan. When I first listened to their music (before seeing them live) I had thought that Alex was the only one singing the main vocals. It was nice to find out that they shared the role, bouncing back and forth between the two of them. It's definitely worth it as they both have unique, and awesome voices!
Check out the interview Zebraprintsky did with Alex and Alan below!!
(I love their spirit and how super sweet these guys were...they were so willing to talk and just hang out! Wicked band vibe right there!)

S.C.E.N.E.fest 2011 Wrap-up
First off, I want to say sorry for lagging behind these past few weeks! I've let the reviews build up and finally they are starting to go insane!
So I attended the wonderful S.C.E.N.E. Music festival in St. Catherine's on June 26th, and it couldn't have been a more perfect day. For the first time in six (yes six) years there was not a cloud in the sky and the rain (finally!) stayed away! The weather was perfect, the music was plentiful and the people were peaceful - well almost.
We (my fellow friend ZebraPrintSky's Jenny Ellis and I) kept to the main stage to check out The Johnstones. These guys have been around for quite some time now and I swear, every time I see them live they get better and better. Not to mention they seem to appear younger as well...do we have a case of Benjamin Button here?? Needless to say, they were definitely a great kick off to the day!
Between sets on the main stage we checked out some of the War Child Busking for Change sets. I first spotted Courage my Love in the hallways at the Fairmont Hotel during Canadian Music Week and I was pleasantly surprised when I got to see them during the festival. They may be young but they have some pretty amazing voices and supporting a great cause is even better. They were definitely a hit on the old Court Room steps outside the Market Square!
Next up was KO. To be honest, I had never heard of him up until that day but it was definitely a surprised to hear his music. While not altogether my taste, he does a mix between rap and rock and he does it very well. There's something about his lyrics (taken from his own life experiences) that make the songs real and raw. He may be singing about drugs, alcohol and getting into trouble, but his lyrics are meaningful and more than a few people can relate to his past. Pretty sure I even smelled a joint or two light up at one point! Jenny (Zebraprintsky remember?!) interviewed KO later on during the day and he was nothing but humble, friendly and willing to talk. He was enjoyable to talk to in front of and behind the camera and it was nice to see that!
After KO was the wonderfully addictive These Kids Wear Crowns. Getting their big break on MuchMusic's Disband, they have been slowly making a name for themselves for the past year or two. With their funky pop-rock vibe and super stage skills, these guys definitely had the crowd rocking. I personally enjoyed their version of "Dance with Somebody", the ever popular hit by Whitney Houston. It was definitely a fun song and honestly just made you want to dance! Jenny caught up with Alex and Alan from TKWC later on to chat about S.C.E.N.E. and their crazy trip to get there! Again, super nice guys who looked like they were having a great time!
In between another lull we caught Dean Richards and Ian Blackwood from The Artist Life on the War Child stage singing acoustic to raise money. These guys are super fantastic and extremely talented.
Then it was time for The Reason to hit the stage. I've only listened to them a handful of times but they are extremely talented. They definitely had the crowd riveted and continued to rock out the S.C.E.N.E. crowd as did their successors before them. They have a distict rock sound and it was awesome to hear them perform live.
We arrived late (went wandering down the streets of St. Kitt's to take in the scene) for Silverstein but they put on a great show as well. Screamo-type music (sorry but true) hurts my ears (I'm partially deaf to begin with haha) but I have to say that when it comes to Silverstein I can always make an exception. There's just something about their music that is different to me than all the rest. They have a great mix between actual vocals and screaming and it's not too overpowering. They were definitely a great addition to this year's Scene.
Finally it was the much anticipated set for U.S.S. If you have never heard of them I highly recommend you look them up. Their unique take on dj'ing and singing puts a different twist on what you hear today on the radios. The two man band (who go by the names of Ash and Human Kabob - no lies) are so friggin' full of energy it's utterly insane! For their entire set (especially Human Kabob), they were all over the stage, into the crowds and even standing on their heads. It`s only something one can witness in person to actually believe. I can fully understand now why they are so popular!
To end off the day (which went by WAY too quickly if you ask me) we made our way to Mikado to see The Little Black Dress. These Toronto boys may have been squished onto a small stage with low lighting but they still managed to put on a great show. The mix between pop and rock has them fitting in perfectly with the scene in St. Kitt`s. I thoroughly enjoyed their set and I was glad to finally get to see them live after many missed chances in the past.
The last of the night was the much anticipated (for me anyways), The Artist Life! Again, I've heard of, and listened to their music for quite some time now but I've always managed to miss them (whether it be in Toronto or at SCENE). They have a wonderfully awesome band and they play extremely well together. Their music off their new album reminds me of a mix of Blink 182 and something else. They honestly have a great album and I totally recommend checking them out if you haven't already!
In between these main sets we got to experience the overall atmosphere of the festival. It's always overrun with the teens trying to see their favourite bands and the hardcore people who come every year but it's also a mix of everybody who just loves the music scene. I love the way the streets fill with people who are just there to have a good time. It's not often where you can pay a mere $35 dollars and get into numerous venues for as many times as you want to catch some great tunes. Although there was a venue that got shut down due to rowdiness (to what extent I never found out) and there was also a massive mosh pit that caused some ruckus at Barracuda Pretty, everything was mainly calm!
Needless to say, while it was a long day I was super thankful for the sun, the amazing music, the awesome people I got to meet and the coolest chick I got to spend the day with! Til next year folks!

Warped Tour Preview 2011: IllScarlett
| Illscarlett at Tattoo Rock Parlour During Canadian Music Week 2011 |
Anyways, I would like to mention today that a beloved Canadian band who has been around for quite some time now, has been touring with Warped Tour since the beginning of this year`s. They are incredibly spunky, full of energy and not something you hear every day on the radio.
Mississauga natives Illscarlett are fun, hyper-spastic, and know how to make the crowd go wild. Wherever they go, you're bound to find crowd-surfing, weed-smoking, music-loving people who know how to have a good time! Currently working on their new album, set for release sometime this year, they are steadfast in making something that everybody will enjoy listening too.
If you know what's right, you will already know who they are! But if you don't and are going to this year's Toronto Warped Tour, I highly recommend taking time out of your schedule to see these Canadian rockers as they hit the stage!
If you want to find out more about Illscarlett you can catch them on myspace, facebook and twitter!

MuchMusic Video Awards 2011
Ooookay, I realize that this is a little delayed but I let time slip away from me and now here we are sadly, a week and two days later! Oops!
Anyways, although I had attended the press room personally last year, due to restrictions I wasn't able to attend this years. But I was offered the opportunity to view the press room digitally and while being in person would have been much better, this was still a pretty darn awesome experience nonetheless! While I was focusing more on the press room and less on the actual awards I had to watch it again after the press room was over so I could fully grasp the entire experience.
In this post I will summarize my opinions on the actual award shows and I'll focus on the artists in following posts!
As we all clearly know this year was as star-studded as ever as many artists and actors walked the red carpet at the home of MuchMusic in Toronto on Queen Street West. Everybody from Lady Gaga, Snoop Dogg, and Selena Gomez (with her boyfriend the Biebz of course) to Ian Somerhalder, Marianas Trench and Shay Mitchell. Everybody popular in today's world was brought in by Much and I give them kudos for that. But while the the talent was top notch, I found that the commentary was rather dull. Sarah Taylor sounded like it was her inner monologue and not something that should be on TV! As for the rest of the VJ's they were okay but I was honestly more entertained by Shawn Desman then I was by any of them!
As for the show, it kind of went in the same direction but it was still entertaining to watch. Lady Gaga was stunning and unique and everyday she proves that being yourself is okay. With her blue hair and amazing backdrop she opened the show with 'Edge of Glory' and setting the tone for the rest of the night.
Selena Gomez is so freaking adorable. Even if she was the worst actress in the world (which she's NOT btw) she just has a cuteness and sweetness about her that makes everybody around her melt. She was cool on stage and taking the roll of co-host seriously and it showed but she also knew how to have fun which is the most important thing when you're in front of thousands of fans. Her performance was okay, nothing spectacular but I love the song and the meaning behind it which instantly made it better for me. Her numerous outfit changes didn't stop at her performance either as she dawned a beautiful flow-y red dress. To be honest it kind of reminded me of lingerie but hey, I could just be the odd (wo)man out.
The performance by Avril Lavigne didn't impress me at all. In fact it was probably the worst in the entire two hour show. I'd be lying if I said I didn't know what it was because she just bored me. She stood there singing, showing little emotion and just seemed to be lacking energy. Avril has been around since I was a teenager (which was quite awhile ago now) and I am honestly just so...tired of her. I know the younger generation loves her, but I just find her to be...blah.
One of my favourite performances of the night (besides Gaga) was Down With Webster. These boys rocked it, singing their new song "She's Dope" and engaging the crowd as they are known for. These group of guys have been through so much and it's great to see them so successful after all the hurdles in the past. I was excited to hear them sound great as well. Remembering last years awards, the sound through the TV wasn't spectacular. Kudos to the crew who ran the awards as they did a great job this year!
Other worthy mentions are the performances of Bruno Mars (<3), Simple Plan with Fefe Dobson as well as
I could go on and asses every little detail but that could last forever and I don't want to bore you to death! Overall I was impressed by the stage and most of the performances! MuchMusic sure knows how to put on a party and make it about the fans and that's the most important thing. There are too many awards shows out there that forget that the fans are the reason why these award shows happen. MuchMusic is great in remembering what is important and I'm glad that I have been able to be apart of them - even in a little way!
Stay tuned for some mini blogs/stories about those who were able to make the press room!
